Charles Ferguson is Senior Lecturer in Business Organisation in the School of Business, Retail and Financial Services at the Coleraine campus of the University of Ulster. His research interest lies primarily in analyzing the development and growth of the UK credit union sector. One of the key outputs from his work is a book entitled “The Strategic Development of Credit Unions” which was published by J.Wiley in 1997.

At present he is involved in a number of projects and these include an investigation of productivity change in US credit unions with Glass (University of Ulster) and McKillop (Queens University Belfast). In collaboration with Hyndman (University of Ulster), McKillop (Queens University Belfast) and Oyelere (Lincoln University, NewZealand) research programmes into the accountability of Irish and UK credit unions are almost complete. Finally with McCarthy, Briscoe and Ward (University College Cork) and McKillop (Queens University Belfast) an investigation into voluntarism and the role of women in Irish credit unions has recently commenced.

To help progress the above research programme a number of research grants have been received over the last two years. The funding bodies are The Royal Irish Academy, The Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (England and Wales), and The Irish Accountancy Educational Trust and the European Commission under the auspices of its programme for Mutual and Co-operative Institutions.
