Curriculum Vitae for Professor Noel Hyndman
Noel is Professor of Management Accounting and Director of Research (Accounting) in the School of Management at Queen’s University Belfast having previously worked at the University of Ulster, where he was head of the School of Accounting and Professor of Accounting, and the University of Ottawa in Canada, where he was Visiting Professor. A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, he was awarded a PhD by the Queen’s University of Belfast for his research in not-for-profit organizations.
His main research interests centre on governance, performance measurement, performance reporting, management accounting and financial reporting in not-for-profit organizations. Public sector organizations, charities and credit unions have provided a particular focus for his research. Ongoing and recently completed research projects with which he has been involved include: management accounting, devolution and democratic accountability funded by CIMA and the ESRC (with: M. Ezzamel, Cardiff; A. Johnsen, Edinburgh; I. Lapsley, Edinburgh; and J. Pallot, Canterbury, New Zealand); annuality in public budgeting funded by CIMA (with R. Jones, Birmingham, and M. Pendlebury, Cardiff); resource accounting and budgeting in the public sector funded by CIMA (with C. Connolly, Queen’s); the use of accounting ratios in the management of credit unions funded by the Irish Accountancy Educational Trust (with D. McKillop, Queen’s); and a comparative study of the use of accruals accounting in the public sector in the UK and Ireland (with C. Connolly, Queen’s). Recently published books include: (with D.G. McKillop and P. Goth) The Structure, Performance and Governance of Irish Credit Unions; and (with McKillop, D.G.) Cases in Management Accounting and Business Finance.
He is joint editor of the Irish Accounting Review, the official journal of the Irish Accounting and Finance Association, and a member of the editorial boards of Research in Healthcare Financial Management, a US journal, and Financial Accountability & Management. He has been involved with the examination and supervision of doctoral students on a range of topics including: reporting by UK charities; performance measurement in the public sector; cost allocation systems in healthcare settings; and reporting by credit unions. In addition, he was International Reviewer of the University of Ottawa CGA-Ontario, Accounting Research Centre, Canada in 2003. Moreover, he was appointed as a Charity SORP Committee Member (2006 onwards) and the Annual Reporting Advisory Group (2003-2005) by the Charity Commissioners for England and Wales, as well as being a member of the Consultative Committee (Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment) to review NI legislation with respect to Industrial and Provident Societies, and Credit Unions (2003-2005).
Noel has taught on a wide range of postgraduate and undergraduate programmes in management accounting and public sector accounting. At Queen’s University Belfast, he is module leader for both the final year undergraduate course Advanced Management Accounting and the second year course Management Accounting. He has introduced and developed courses in Public Sector Accounting into the postgraduate curriculum at the University of Ulster, and also taught on MBA programmes both in North America and the UK. In addition, through his involvement with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland (ICAI), he has been engaged in syllabus development, assessment processes and the delivery of programmes for the ICAI.
